Gek Poh Shopping Centre, located in Jurong West neighbourhood, serves more than 5,600 dwelling units of residents in the vicinity. It has a retail space of approximately 5,070 square metres providing a variety of essential products and services catering to the residents' daily needs. This refurbishment project was initiated by HDB. UGL Premas Space Management + Design team took part in the open tender and was awarded the project in 2006. The team then put up a proposal on the design of internal common areas and did a makeover to the shopping centre. At the central atrium, clever use of uplights reflecting off the new slanted white ceiling panels gives illumination resembling skylight. The old escalator was replaced & repositioned to optimise the space usage at the atrium. Lightings and glass parapets cladding against the escalator wall creates a cool and modern ambience for the space. New frameless glass parapets replacement with colour glass inserts and suspended banners with colourful graphics nicely completed the pleasing new look for the atrium. | Central Atrium | | | (Now) | | | | | (Before) |

The toilets at the 1st storey had a total makeover, giving it a refreshing design compatible to those at private commercial complexes. A baby nappy changing corner, kid’s toilet facilities and handicap toilet were added.
The project implementation was challenging. Upgrading works were carried out at all common area with minimal disruption to on-going retail activities. Over a period of 6 months (from Sep 2006 to Mar 2007) and working only after 10.00 pm during the night till 7.00 am in the morning, UGL Premas Space Management + Design team had delivered the projects successfully within budget and schedule, as well as achieved quality deliverables and good safety record. The completed project was appreciated by the HDB management, tenants and shoppers as being tastefully done and rejuvenated the shopping centre with a very welcoming feeling as graphics & colours were introduced to refresh the shoppers' experience. They were thankful that there was minimal disruption to the business during the upgrading. The new toilet concept had also helped HDB receiving its 1st “5-star Happy Toilet” award from the Singapore Restroom Association for the shopping centres upgrading programme. |
